WHY WE CELEBRATE
Because a riot sparked a global movement
The concept of Pride Month reaches back to at least 1924 with the founding of the Society of Human Rights in Chicago by Henry Gerber. However, it wasn’t until June 1969 that a series of riots at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, New York City, led to a turning point in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. Today, Pride Month is held annually in June to commemorate the years of struggle for civil rights and the ongoing pursuit of equal justice under the law for the LGBTQ+ community.
