The birth of the modern day environmental movement
Earth Day was conceived by Senator Gaylord Nelson on April 22, 1970, as a way to force the issues of environmental concerns onto the national agenda. At the time, there were no legal or regulatory mechanisms to protect our environment, and Americans were highly oblivious to environmental concerns and the impacts of pollution on human health.
