Back in 1810, on October 12, the citizens of Munich gathered to celebrate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The wedding festivities included horse races, which eventually led to the idea of an annual celebration.
Milestones & Traditions: The first few years saw horse races and agricultural shows as the main attractions, but in 1818, beer stands were introduced, and the party really kicked off. By 1896, beer tents replaced the stands, and the modern Oktoberfest we know (and love) began to take shape.
As the festival grew, so did its importance in Bavarian culture. Traditional folk dancing, lederhosen, and dirndl became cornerstones of the event. Today, it’s common to see attendees dressed in traditional Bavarian attire as they enjoy various German beers.
