RESPONDING TO A HIGHER CALLING
Sandy Koufax and the 1965 World Series
Game 1 of the 1965 World Series fell on October 6, Yom Kippur of that year. Despite Koufax being the obvious choice as the starter for crucial game 1, he would not be able to play as the day does not allow for any work of any kind, including playing a sport. Even his boss wouldn't allow it saying, “I won’t let Sandy pitch on Yom Kippur under any circumstances, I can’t let the boy do that to himself." All's well that ends well and the Dodgers won the World Series that year, with Koufax earning his second WS MVP.
